‘It might not happen overnight’

Patrick Ewing sits on the draft dais as a Knicks representative

Speaking on Thursday in advance of the Knicks’ preseason opener against the Detroit Pistons, former Knicks Patrick Ewing and Latrell Sprewell discussed new head coach Tom Thibodeau and the upcoming season.

“He’s a great coach. He’s stood the test of time,” Ewing said about Thibodeau during an appearance on MSG A.M. “He was there with me when I was playing with the Knicks as an assistant coach. We worked together in Houston on Jeff Van Gundy’s staff.

“He’s knowledgeable. He’s going to work his butt off to try and put them into the right places and positions in order to be successful. He’s a workaholic. He’s a New York guy. He’s going to bring his hard hat and lunch pail every day to try and get those guys to be the best they can be and to help bring back the love of the Knicks to the city.”

When it comes to playing in the city, something the new Knicks will initially be getting used to without fans in the building at Madison Square Garden due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ewing said it’s all about mindset and work ethic.

“The goal is that every time you step on that floor, put on that Knicks uniform and step into that building, you bring that level of excellence to that franchise. So that’s the goal – to get back to the grind, putting your shoes and socks on and trying to be the best team you can be. It might not happen overnight. But I think that at some point, the free agents and everyone will come back and see what a great city New York is.”

Sprewell, also appearing on MSG A.M., talked about where the focus should be as the preseason gets underway.

“I think you just have to get a look at everyone,” Sprewell said. “You want to give everyone a fair chance to get on the floor and see what they are going to bring to the table. You’re going to play as many guys as you can. You obviously don’t want to play guys too much and get them hurt this early in the season. So I would think they would just play more guys and try and get a look at as many guys as you can.”
