Dell Curry discusses James Wiseman impressions, LaMelo Ball comparisons

Dell Curry discusses Wiseman, constant comparisons to LaMelo originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

The Curry family will be in the spotlight on Saturday night.

While Steph Curry will continue to make his case for MVP, his father, Dell, will be behind the mic providing color commentary for the Charlotte Hornets TV broadcast.

Before Saturday’s Warriors-Hornets matchup in Charlotte, Dell Curry spoke with The Athletic’s Anthony Slater about a wide range of topics in an interesting Q&A.

Slater asked Dell Curry about his early impressions of James Wiseman, who he first saw as a prep star.

“I was able to watch James in high school,” Dell Curry told Slater. “He was at Steph’s Elite camp when I was there. Special talent. A lot of bounce. Another guy who loves to play the game, loves to work. He’s with a great group of guys.”

Wiseman is hoping to rejoin the Warriors on their current road trip after missing the past 10 games with a sprained left wrist. Before his injury, Wiseman was removed from the starting lineup but was actually starting to see a spike in production.

In his four games off the bench, Wiseman is averaging 13.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in 19 minutes per game. In 16 starts this year, he averaged 11.8 points and 6.1 rebounds in 21.4 minutes per game.

“I like him,” Dell Curry told Slater. “The fact he was taken out of the starting lineup and he didn’t take it as a demotion, you didn’t see him disgruntled or pouting or anything and he came in off the bench with the same energy, that’s maturity in a young man. I like Wiseman.”

Dell Curry has also had a front-row seat to watch LaMelo Ball, whom the Hornets selected with the No. 3 pick, one after the Warriors drafted Wiseman. There have been constant comparisons of the two, with some rumors leaking that the Warriors saw Ball as more talented, but Dell Curry said the players both landed in good situations.

“The Warriors obviously needed help at the center position,” Dell Curry told Slater. “When you have a pick that high and you have a position of need and a player you like, that’s an easy choice that they made. Then LaMelo falls into the Hornets’ laps. (The) top three is doing well. Those guys can all really play.”
