Why Steph Curry on fire is Bill Simmons’ favorite NBA thing to watch

Why red-hot Steph is Bill Simmons’ favorite NBA thing to watch originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

With 5:15 remaining in the third quarter of the Warriors’ win over the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night, Steph Curry completely shook Rudy Gay as the shot clock neared zero and drilled a 26-foot stepback 3-pointer.

The incredible shot put the Warriors ahead 76-55, and gave the two-time NBA MVP 14 points in the quarter.

It also elicited the following reaction from yours truly:

DON’T EVER TAKE STEPH CURRY FOR GRANTED BECAUSE YOU WILL NEVER HAVE MORE FUN WATCHING A PLAYER IN A WARRIORS UNIFORM EVER AGAIN

The night prior, the three-time NBA champion did something that resulted in a tweet with similar sentiment.

Myself — and millions of others around the world — are not alone. It turns out that The Ringer’s Bill Simmons feels the same way.

“Everybody kind of forgot how influential and incredible he was, and kind of gravitated toward [Damian] Lillard,” he said Wednesday on his podcast. “And him and Dame — the stats are pretty close. But there’s something with Steph that will always be a little bit different.

“First of all, he was first. He invented a lot of this. But the joy — especially when he has a heat check — is just different. It’s like inclusive.

“And I’m not a Warriors fan [but] when he gets hot, there’s nothing I want to watch on a basketball court more than Steph feeling it. When he took the 40 footer (vs. the Dallas Mavericks last Saturday, and Mike Breen [said] ‘Bang,’ I was like, ‘Yes! We’re in! Steph is back!’ “

Facts upon facts.

The only unanimous MVP in NBA history is averaging 34.6 points, 5.4 assists and 5.1 rebounds over his last seven games, while shooting 57.3 percent overall, 52.4 percent from deep and 94.6 percent from the free throw line.

Steve Kerr and Draymond Green believe he is playing the best basketball of his career, and Kent Bazemore declared Steph “the best player in basketball right now.”

But according to an MVP straw poll conducted by ESPN, Curry currently places seventh in the voting.

That will change if the Warriors catch fire and make a move in the standings, and Curry will have a prime opportunity to change some people’s minds Saturday night when Golden State hosts Kevin Durant, James Harden, Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets in prime time.
