Blake Griffin agrees to deal with Nets

Blake Griffin Nets TREATED

Blake Griffin has agreed to a deal with the Brooklyn Nets, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports.

SNY’s Ian Begley confirmed earlier on Sunday that several teams that were interested in Griffin expected him to sign with the Nets after he cleared waivers.

The six-time All-Star was bought out by the Detroit Pistons on Friday, and the Nets were “believed to be leaders” in signing him, per Charania, so it looks like that thought has become reality.

Though Griffin isn’t the same player he used to be, his potential arrival in Brooklyn completes what should now easily be considered the scariest superteam in the NBA.

Griffin would join a Nets team that is No. 2 in the East and already boasts Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving on its roster. He’d also get to play with former teammate DeAndre Jordan again.

“I’m sure he wants to win,” Harden said on Griffin after the All-Star game. “If he’s passed up on money to stay in Detroit, he wants to win, and he wants the opportunity to play meaningful minutes, and I’m assuming that’s one of the reasons why he came.

“Obviously we know the athletic and high-jumping Blake, but I think as of these last couple of years, he’s knocking down the three-ball a little bit better, ball handling is a lot better and I think he could be a great contribution to this team.”

In 20 games with Detroit this season, he averaged 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in just over 31 minutes per game. He was shooting 31.5 percent from three as well.

Griffin was an All-Star as recently as 2019, so there’s still potential for him to be a force on the court, but injuries have kept him down in recent years, so we’ll just have to wait and see which version of the former high-flyer shows up in Brooklyn.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania was first to report Griffin had cleared waivers earlier today and was expected to join the team.
